〖Exhibiting Gallery at FAA2025 – The Gallery by SOIL〗
Since its founding in 2012, The Gallery by SOIL has been dedicated to advancing Asian lacquer art, bringing together master artisans and contemporary artists of diverse cultural backgrounds. Based in Hong Kong, the gallery serves as a platform where tradition and innovation converge.
At Fine Art Asia2025, the gallery presents a recent lacquer work by Japanese artist Mine Tanigawa, who won the 2021 Kyoto City Prize for Young Artist. Recently, her works have been acquired by the V&A museum in London as a permanent collection.
Drawing inspiration from the natural landscapes of her hometown, Tanigawa’s sculptural works reveal supple lines and flowing curves reminiscent of brushstrokes in ink painting. Traditionally, Japanese lacquer is associated with weight and solidity. However, Tanigawa reimagines its possibilities by combining “urushi”, the Japanese lacquer, with fibre-reinforced plastic, achieving a remarkable sense of lightness and airiness. Meticulously crafted and polished with traditional techniques, her works embody an interplay between strength and delicacy, solidity and breath, offering a contemporary vision of lacquer as both material and metaphor.
